The No. 8 Arkansas Razorbacks are off to a strong 9-2 start after capping a 4-0 week with a three-game sweep against the Wright State Raiders. The Hogs have done so behind the strength of a deep lineup that has displayed a versatile offensive attack through three weeks.
The Razorbacks currently hold a .310 batting average and have produced plenty of power with a .556 slugging percentage. Arkansas has two players hitting over .400, five hitting over .300 and seven everyday starters hitting at least .270. The Hogs have five players with multiple home runs thus far, as well as five players with multiple stolen bases.
The Razorbacks have also displayed great situational hitting throughout the first three weeks. The Hogs are hitting .344 with runners in scoring position, .294 with two outs and have a 54.5% success rate advancing runners, all of which rank in the top six of the SEC to this point.
Junior right fielder Jace Bohrofen, who leads the team with a .424 batting average and is ninth in the SEC with a .565 on-base percentage, believes the lineup’s versatility is part of what sets the Hogs apart and makes them tough on opposing pitchers.
“I think that’s kind of what makes our offense unique,” Bohrofen said. “We can hit for average, we can hit homers, we can hit with runners in scoring position. But I think something that you guys talk about is the willingness to fight off pitches and wear pitchers down using their pitch count. I mean, that stuff plays a role. It doesn’t really show up on the stat sheet much, but I think that’s going to be a big key to success down the road.”
The Razorbacks are currently averaging 9.3 runs per game, which has helped them overcome a pitching staff that has had its ups and downs in the early going.
“It's been huge. The offense has been good,” Arkansas head coach Dave Van Horn said. “They've been finding ways to put together. It seems like most every game they put together what we call a crooked-number inning where they're scoring two, three, four runs.
“But they've also had a lot of innings where we score one here, one there, and then we put you away with a big inning. And that has to do with plate discipline and just making the other team work a little bit.”
Senior first baseman Brady Slavens has been a key force for Arkansas in each of the past three seasons and believes the depth in the lineup breeds confidence throughout.
“I think it's just the comfort of knowing that if you have an off game, somebody's going to pick you up,” Slavens said. “I mean, anywhere in the lineup, whether it's the guy in front of you or the guy behind you. Down or up in the order, we can have a new guy every game. It's just comforting to know that anybody can do it on any given night.”
The No. 8 Arkansas Razorbacks will continue their 18-game homestand at Baum-Walker Stadium on Tuesday afternoon as they welcome in the Army Black Knights. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. (CST) and will be streamed on SEC Network Plus.
